The Enchanting World of Music
WEEK 1
Strike Up the Bands
We start off the 2017 Summer Concert Series with a salute to the Big Band Era when Swing was king and dance floors across the Nation resounded with the music of great dance bands such as Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, and Duke Ellington. Add the sensational vocalist Barbara Morrison to the evening and this concert will be one you won’t want to miss!
WEEK 2
From Sea to Shining Sea
This title is borrowed from the last strain of “America the Beautiful” and is a perfect way to introduce music associated with the various regions of our country. Join us on this musical journey, which ends in Washington D.C. with a stirring tribute to the branches of our military followed by our National March, “Stars and Stripes Forever!” The energetic singing of Becky Martin ends the evening with a bang.
WEEK 3
Those “Looney” Tunes
Bring the kids, young and old, as this music was written for all ages. If you like, come in costume for the occasion! Animated movies provide inspiration for composers to let their hair down and create the craziest and zaniest of music. It takes highly trained performers to play it well. Come listen and enjoy as your Long Beach Municipal Band gives it a try. The beautiful and talented Nicole Kubis joins the party. Fun for the entire family.
WEEK 4
Behind the Scenes
Early movie theaters showing silent films realized the need to add live music in order to create more emotional involvement with their audiences. This process continues today. This concert’s selections were originally composed as background material to enhance a film’s drama. These scores presented such a powerful statement that, even though intended to be “behind the scenes,” they are now as famous as the films themselves. At the “front of the scene” will be the stylized vocalization of Meloney Collins.
WEEK 5
Cinemagic – The Music of John Williams
John Williams is the most prolific composer of our time. The volume of his works for films and concert halls speak for themselves. Over 110 films scores, 15 orchestral works, and 12 television show themes – all in the last 40 years! To date, John Williams has received over 50 Grammy awards. Conductor Curtis has selected a representative group of compositions for your enjoyment in honor of this great American music icon. To add to the festivities we welcome vocalist Julie Ragins to the stage.
WEEK 6
The Music of a Generation
This last week of our 2017 season promises to be one of the highlights of summer. Each generation has its own soundtrack. This program presents some of the most defining voices from the late 50’s into the 80’s. From ultimate Classic Rock, to Pop, R&B and the Blues we end the season with a rollicking good time! Vocalist Tony Galla returns with the Studio Band to round out our enchanted summer of music.
